Getting Organized, Part I

I’m still on track for a start on 2023-09-01, although I admit to the occasional quick blast of cold feet. It’s not easy for me to choose to do this at this particular time. However, I think I need this for myself, as well as a potential career pivot, so here we go!

I do have several things to do yet to get ready for jumping in. The college-related activities that I need to finish:

  • 2023-08-09: Do my intake interview with my enrollment counselor. It’s not a difficult thing – they allot 30 minutes for it, but if you’ve been a WGU student before, I’d be surprised if it takes longer than 10 minutes. Basically it’s a discussion about what is expected of students, what students should expect in terms of their mentor, course instructors, etc, and ensure that the student is prepared to make their financial arrangements.
  • 2023-08-22: Make sure my payment plan is in place. I’m opting to self-pay, but I think I’ll do a payment plan, so I’ll have to sign up for it and pay the small fee.
  • Happily see that I’ve flipped status from “admitted” to “enrolled” in the portal. Yay! I’ll be a student again!
  • Sometime after status changes and before 2023-09-01: I’ll be assigned a mentor. With any luck, this will be quick, and I’ll be near to the front of the line so I can get an early first phone call appointment. This matters because you and your mentor have to approve your term plan before you can start classes. If you don’t get that appointment pretty quickly, it can sometimes be as long as the first or second week of the term before you get to have that meeting. That would be a sad thing, indeed!

Note that I didn’t forget about orientation. I shouldn’t need to do the orientation class that new students are required to do. The course is designed to help new students understand how WGU courses work. I’m glad – I understand and applaud that they have new students do the orientation because WGU can be a surprise to students, but it does take a bit of time to get through it!
